Donation Procedure
  1. Make Sure You're Eligible
Donors must meet these preliminary eligibility requirements:

    • Be between the ages of 18 and 65.
    • Weigh at least 110 lbs.
    • Be in general good health.

  2. New Donors Must Also:

    • Possess a document with their Social Security Number or a Visa Border Crossing Card.
    • Possess a valid picture ID (for example: driver's license, student or military ID) with their current address.
    • Individuals must reside at a permanent address within no more than a 125 mile radius of the plasma center. Certain facililties may have a smaller mile radius; in which you may need to contact the facility nearest to receive more detailed information.

  3. Preparing to Donate...
Starting the day before the donation:

    • Drink lots of water the day before and the same day you donate.
    • Prior to donating, EAT A WELL-BALANCED MEAL and avoid alcohol or beverages with caffeine.
    • Avoid fatty and high-cholesterol foods like cheese, whole milk, fried foods, hotdogs, etc.
    • Maintain your iron and protein levels by eating a well-balanced diet.
    • Finally, drink plenty of water after you donate to replenish fluids.

  4. Visit a Plasma Donor Center

Check in at the Front Reception Desk
Upon entering the facility, please provide a current photo ID, proof of Social Security Number or a Visa Border Crossing Card, and proof of your current address (current lease, utility bill, etc.). You will then be asked to fill out a questionnaire that will aid us in determining your suitability for donation. Finally, we will also take a photo of you to keep in your donor record file.

    Medical Screening
You will then move through a process known as screening. Through this procedure we will further determine your suitability to donate by taking your vital health signs, (weight, blood pressure, pulse and temperature) obtaining a test sample to measure your hematocrit (measures how much space in the blood is occupied by red blood cells) and your total protein (the amount of protein in your plasma) through a small drop of your blood that we extract through a pinprick on one of your fingers. A series of high risk behavior and medical history questions will also be asked.

    Physical Examination
Now you visit with one of our Medical Supervisors or Physicians for a more complete medical assessment. This evaluation occurs once per year as long as you remain an active donor. The Medical Supervisor or Physician will complete a hands-on basic physical examination; a medical history interview to learn about your past and present medical and surgical history as well as medications you may be taking or have recently taken. You will also be asked a series of questions to help us evaluate if you had been at risk of exposure to infectious diseases. The Medical staff may ask additional information or request information from your personal physician. All these steps will help us determine if it is safe for you to donate plasma and ultimately determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate for plasma donation. Remember to see your personal physician regulary, our medical proesses are not meant to replace your routine medical care. Once your donor record file is prepared, you will be ready for your plasma donation.

    Plasmapheresis
You are now ready to make your first donation and will begin the process of plasmapheresis (the automated process of collecting plasma). You will be seated comfortably in the donation area while our trained medical staff will prepare for the process of removing plasma from your blood. We will extract the plasma into a pooling bottle and then return your red blood cells back to you through the same needle. The supplies that are used in collecting the plasma are sterile, used only once, and then discarded.

    Completion of Your Donation
After you have completed your donation you will be asked to wait approximately five minutes until you have adjusted to the change in your blood volume. Most people do not experience any negative effects, but some may feel slightly lightheaded, which soon passes. Once you are ready, you will proceed to the pay out counter where you will be compensated for the time it has taken you to donate plasma. Please contact the center nearest you to learn about the amount of compensation you can expect and what other bonuses, if applicable, may be available to you.

    After Care
While plasma regenerates very quickly (usually within 24 - 48 hours) and plasmapheresis has few to no side effects, it is important that you take care of yourself after your donation. Having something to eat and drink once you are finished helps replenish your blood volume and restore your energy. Our staff is here to assist you in any way they can to ensure that you have a safe and comfortable donation, so if you have any questions or concerns, please discuss them with one of our medical staff members at your local donor center.

  5. What's Next?
Thank you very much for your donation! The only thing more important than your first donation is your second. Without at least two donations, we will be unable to use your plasma to produce any medications. Please stop by the reception area or give us a call to setup an appointment for your next donation.

Biomat Salt lake plasma donations save lives

Your Donation Saves Lives

...And improves the lives of thousands of people.

Plasma derived therapies are used to treat or prevent serious disorders and diseases such as:

Hemophilia | Immune system deficiencies | Tetanus | Hepatitis B | Treatment for burns | Treatment for shock | Treatment for major trauma...
For example, people who suffer from certain forms of hemophilia lack or are deficient in the natural proteins in the blood that help stop bleeding after an injury. Plasma derived medicines are used to treat people with this disorder so that they may lead normal, active lives.

In addition, hospitals and emergency rooms all over the world use plasma-derived albumin in the treatment of traumatic injuries such as shock and severe burns.
